This dog served as a best friend and companion for Jennings when all hoped was lost. He called him "Doggie" and it stayed with him to the end of his days (picture to the right). However, he took pride and comfort in his stuffed Dog, which was secretly given to him by a nun at one of the foster facilities. From being beaten and dragged across a wooden floor to being starved for days, he never once gave up. He was treated horribly at these places and the events that took place make your heart ache for this young little boy. Jennings Michael Burch, at the age of 8, was transferred back and forth from foster home to foster home, because of his sick mother and troubled living situation. This book was about a young boy who endured an incredible amount of hardships. They Cage Animals at Night was a heart-wrenching auto-biography.

The Pigeon prepares mentally: He’ll need a ticket and “exemplary patience” to wait in line. Since learning about the existence of roller coasters, he’s become giddy with excitement. The Pigeon is on an emotional-and physical-roller coaster. A winner for a winter storytime, this is as amusing as watching real kittens romp. Preschoolers will, no doubt, choose their own names for them. Not naming the kittens is a clever and shrewd stroke, enabling the artwork to imbue each cat with personality by its color, feline antics and expressions. As the fourth kitten laughs, jumps and rolls in it, the other three look at each other and say, “We’ll be right out!” Grinning and licking snowflakes, the fourth kitten replies, “I can’t wait.” The spare text is charmingly illustrated with simple black-lined kittens, minimally delineated scenes and white bordered spreads that frame the colorful felines. Then one winter morning they awaken to snow. The first kitten says, “Snow scares me!” The second kitten says, “Freezing cold!” The third kitten says, “Cold to the tips of our tails!” But the fourth kitten says, “I can’t wait!” All through summer and autumn, the three kittens worry and the fourth one can’t wait. Once there were four kittens who had never seen snow. The main hospital on North Washington Street connected by a long narrow walkway to a building on N. It was called the Old Hallowell School Hospital and was eventually expanded to five structures. The building served as a school from 1832 until the Surgeon General designated it as a hospital after the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861. The spread of disease in hospital wards and army camps caused two-thirds of the deaths during the Civil War. Various infections coursed through the wards, as well as contagious diseases like typhoid fever. The Civil War took place just prior to the development of germ theory by European doctors therefore, medical professionals were unaware that instruments should be sterilized and wounds should be properly cleaned. Civilians and local officials criticized the Army’s poor treatment of the wounded and called for a system that would ease the suffering of the soldiers. When the routed Union Army came running back to Alexandria, no doctors or hospitals were waiting to tend to the one thousand men who had been injured. When the Union and Confederate armies clashed on the fields near Manassas, Virginia in July 1861, the opposing sides had made few preparations to care for the wounded. Alexandria was the first Southern city to be occupied by Northern troops. This occurred just one day after its citizens had voted to have their state join the Confederacy. On May 24, 1861, Union troops crossed the Potomac River and occupied Alexandria, Virginia – from the first days of the Civil War to the last. But the continual presence of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass in the popular zeitgeist is sufficient familiarity for anyone to pick up Alice, an arresting novel by Christina Henry published last summer. Shayne’s mother had broken off her engagement and they moved away, but now they’re back in town. That first chapter gutted me and then in the next one we jumped nine months ahead. Shayne was at the funeral of her future step brother, along with his brothers and both of their families. The story started off with an emotional bang. Three things my mother acquired when she became engaged: We encounter racism in everyday situations in workplaces, stores, schools, housing, and daily social interaction." -Patricia Hill Collins For many African American women, racism is not something that exists in the distance. society since 1970, racial segregation remains deeply entrenched in housing, schooling, and employment. “Despite important strides to desegregate U.S. Their only "sin" is their black color for which they are persecuted in American society. The white men assault these women and they are both physically and sexuality exploited in their workplaces and in their everyday lives. Black females are depicted as being whose sole purpose is to have physical relationships and they have no other motive in their lives. They have been portrayed as wild beings because they are considered as uncivilized creatures, who have no control on their erotic desires. The simile of panther has been employed for black females because they are taken as savage creatures who pounce like panther during intercourse. “Black women’s portrayal in pornography as caged, chained, and naked creatures who possess “panther-like,” savage, and exotic sexual qualities reinforces this theme of Black women’s “wildness” as symbolic of an unbridled female sexuality…where Whiteness as symbolic of both civilization and culture is used to separate objects from animals.” -Patricia Hill Collins Written by people who wish to remain anonymous We are thankful for their contributions and encourage you to make your own.
